Molasses Creek Band mixes music with message Riviera Theatre Thursday, March 24 at 7 p.m. Ticket prices: $20 (presentation & performance) $40 (includes a meet & greet dessert reception)

 Local Contact: Joelle Logue, 908-3964

One of the YWCA Northeast Region’s focus issues for 2011 is womens health. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is a little less than 1 in 8, but fortunately the death rate from breast cancer is falling because of early treatment and research. The YWCA Tonawandas, in an effort to build awareness and salute WNY breast cancer survivors, will offer a showing of Marcy Brenner’s award winning documentary, Dead Girl Walking, 7 p.m. March 24 at the Riviera Theatre. Following the short film, Marcy will join the rest of the Molasses Creek Band for an energetic, fun-filled concert.
All proceeds benefit the YWCA’s women’s initiatives.
Marcy was 34 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, the same year she lost her mother to ovarian cancer. Her journey from the brink of despair to being truly alive is captured in a beautifully rendered 35-minute film for breast cancer survivors and their partners, for spiritual seekers and for anyone whose life has been touched by a life-threatening illness. The film has won numerous awards including the Amazing Grace Award at Toronto’s Breast Fest Film Festival, Award of Excellence at the West Virginia Film Festival, and an Honorable Mention at the Bayou City Film Festival in Houston, Texas. She also received the SHARE! Recovery’s Maureen Brugh Award for Outstanding Contribution to Recovery Resources in Los Angeles, California. “If I was offered a deal to go back in time and live my life without cancer, and all I would have to give up was the insights, experience and purpose that have come to me as a result, I would not make that bargain. I was given a wake-up call to life.” (Marcy Brenner, Relay for Life Keynote)
Marcy and her husband Lou Castro are newer members of the Molasses Creek Band, known for its Americana and folk music throughout the Southeast since 1993. The band was born amidst the exotic fig trees and rich tidewater marshes of Ocracoke Island, NC, a magical place where stunning natural beauty mixes with community to create a rich melting pot of art and musical traditions. The high-energy acoustic band continues to win loyal followings with their captivating stage presence, elegant harmonies, blazing instrumentals, and a quirky sense of humor. Award winners from Garrison Keillor's “A Prairie Home Companion,” Molasses Creek has recorded 10 albums over the past 17 years and two of its members were featured in Warner Brothers’ movie "Nights in Rodanthe."
Molasses Creek’s roster includes Gary Mitchell (guitar & vocals), Fiddler Dave Tweedie (fiddle & vocals), Lou Castro (dobro, bass, & vocals), Marcy Brenner (mandolin, bass, vocals), and Gerald Hampton (mandolin & bass). The band, members of the Southern Arts Federation, has toured throughout the United States, has been featured in Our State magazine's “Best of NC,” frequently headline at 'First Night' Williamsburg and has opened for Garrison Keillor and Rhonda Vincent and the Rage
